Asteroid Typing

Asteroids split on impact. Type a long word and it shatters into two shorter ones.

Type a long word, watch it shatter

Asteroid Typing is a falling-words game with a planned twist: type a long word (8+ letters) and the asteroid splits into two shorter words on impact, both of which must also be typed before they leave the screen. The split mechanic is a future feature in this version — v1 ships with standard falling asteroids and the split system queued for the next release. The space-themed art, the slow asteroid roll, and the eerie deep-space soundtrack are here today.

The space pool

110 space-themed words: rocket, asteroid, meteor, orbit, gravity, lightyear, redshift, nebula, quasar, supernova. The same pool that powers Typing Rocket and Typing Alien — so your scores across the three games are loosely comparable. Asteroid Typing has the slowest fall speed of the three, which makes it the most readable. It is also the only one with a "long words score double" rule, so you can boost your score by aiming for the chunky words like horizon and singularity.

How to play

  1. Click Start.
  2. Asteroids drift down from the top. Each carries a word.
  3. Type the word — any visible word — to destroy that asteroid.
  4. Long words (8+ letters) score double points.
  5. Three missed asteroids ends the round.

Why this game rewards patience

Most falling-words games reward whoever types fastest. Asteroid Typing's long-word scoring rewards whoever picks the best target. A skilled player who patiently types constellation for double points outperforms a frantic player who clears five short words in the same time. This shift — from speed to selection — is what separates 80 WPM from 110 WPM in competitive typing. Selection skill is also the harder skill to train.

A tip for word-pool veterans

If you have played Typing Rocket and Typing Alien with this pool, you'll have a feel for which long words trip you up. Antimatter, singularity, extraterrestrial are common stumbles. Practice them in a Typing 99 round before returning to Asteroid Typing — pre-warming your fingers on the problem words pays off immediately.

Beyond Asteroid Typing

The two space siblings are Typing Rocket (reverse direction, level structure) and Typing Alien (multi-wave, boss word). For falling words without the space theme, Typing Rain is the punishing one (one typo resets the word) and Typing of the Ghosts is the accelerating one. Typing Bomb uses independent countdown timers per target — a different time-pressure model entirely. Asteroid Typing is the slowest of the falling-words family, intentionally — it's the one to recommend to people who get overwhelmed by Typing Rain.

Frequently asked

What is the splitting rule?

Words 8+ letters break into two roughly half-sized words on first kill.

Can splits split again?

No — second-generation asteroids vanish on a single correct word.

Why is this in Space?

Asteroids belong to the space theme and share the sci-fi word pool with Typing Alien and Typing Rocket.
